How to Market your Practice

Marketing is an essential component of business management. In the field of consulting, marketing serves as one of the most important factors that determine a consultant’s success. Effective marketing is important to attract and maintain the right amount and the right kind of clients. According to recent studies among consulting firms, twenty-five percent of a consultant’s time should be directed at implementing various marketing procedures. Below are some of these procedures:

a. To keep yourself informed with the latest consulting opportunities in your area, make it a point to regularly scan the advertisements in the various publications such as newspapers, magazines, and yellow pages. Post advertisements of your services in these publications as well

b. Conduct research on the major consulting firms in your area. Get to know professionals who are in the same line of service. This will make sure that you are well aware of your competition and help you build a network.

c. Register your company with major private and public directories and resource lists. Make it a point to conduct routine marketing by contacting various agencies and organizations that are known for getting consulting contracts.

d. Make sure that your firm distributes simple marketing tools such as brochures, flyers, and newsletters to all your prospect clients. You can give these out during seminars, conferences, and forums. If your company is relatively new, you might consider sending these marketing materials directly to the offices of executives from various companies that might need your consulting services

e. Maintain communication with your former clients. Make sure that they are well aware of your achievements. If there are any, continuously update them with your new set of services. You can do this by sending brochures, proposals, and newsletters or e-mail
