The consultant is someone who is supposed to be an expert in a specific field of study or profession. As such, his primary function is to sell that expertise to clients. In general, consultants serve as advisors. He is responsible for conducting assessments and analysis of the practices of his clients. Clients can also turn to consultants when they have problems with their present operations.

The consultants are then expected to come up with possible solutions in the form of planned courses of action which can be implemented by the employees of the company, with or without his supervision. In addition to that, consultants can also play the role of trainers. They provide trainings or seminars in their field of expertise as part of the company’s strategy to solve their present set of issues. Also, consultants can be asked to conduct researches and predict outcomes. This usually applies to consultants in the field of marketing and advertising. As for consultants in the field of finance and accounting, they are often hired to review finance management procedures and to find ways to obtain, control, and save funds. When consultants are hired for human resource purposes, their job description primarily involves job analysis and employee motivation. They are also tasked to formulate effective recruitment strategies, productivity techniques, and compensation programs.

Where can consultants work?

Consultants serve as the “temporary” employees that fill up positions that do not require permanent employment. This means that their tasks should be performed on a regular basis, but not permanently. Consultants can work in almost every type of company that is related to their field of expertise. They can work in businesses, non-profit organizations, and in public or governmental agencies. They are commonly hired on a contractual basis or on a per project basis. However, consultants can also be employed on a permanent set-up in large consulting firms or in specialized firms. In these firms, they will be deployed in various companies on a per project basis as well.
